Happy 4th of July

This week, I came home for my niece’s and father’s birthday. While here, I decided to check out the fireworks near where I live. Here are a few sample images.

Wall Project Samples

For the past couple of months, I’ve been obsessed with the way walls look. Each one has a odd sense of individuality, weathered through both natural and artificial means. Lately, I’ve been photographing interesting walls whose individuality appeals to me. Here’s a few examples:

I have many more to come. The series has some more room for growth, but I’m figuring it out as I’m doing it.

Here are some images from I building I saw on my way to drop off my rent on day. I really liked the sense of geometry and shapes in the front, with the four lines seeming especially menacing.

Abstract Architecture – 800 West Franklin St.

800 West Franklin St.

Lately, I’ve been photographing the buildings I find interesting in Richmond because I have always had a strong appreciation for the unique architecture of the area. However, I’m trying not to do tradition shots of them. Instead, I try to emphasize the individuality of each building by photographing the abstract parts using unique and untraditional angles.

I’ve always found this building in particular to be interesting since I came to school. It was right next to my dorm freshmen year and I was immediately drawn to it. Someone once told me it was a retirement home. I really appreciate the texture of the bricks and the separated shape of the building.

I have many shots from this series. There shall be more to come soon.

A New Beginning

The Suburbs

I present to you a few photos I’ve been working on. It’s been a while since I have even logged into this blog. Despite being productive, I felt like I needed a break from publishing my work. While I did love what my class/this blog had done for my productivity, much of the stuff on here felt very “incomplete” in a sense.

W. Grace St. Rooftop - Diagonal

For those who were unaware, I started this blog for my introductory creative advertising class at VCU called “Curiousness.”  The purpose of the class was to challenge the students’ creativity by having each of them maintain a blog where they had to create 54 posts based on one brand, this semester being Kleenex Facial Tissues. Each post had to display at least 45 minutes of work and sometimes had to tie into a directive, such as “contrast.” “fluid,” and others.

W. Grace St. Rooftop - Entrance

Much of this “incomplete” feeling came from the nature of the blog itself. Because there were so many posts I had to do on top of all my other classes, I couldn’t give each project the proper amount of time and care I would have wanted to put in. Another reason is because many of the projects were done reluctantly in order to keep up and not fall too far behind, some of them feel less genuine and more forced. As a creative person, proper execution and sincerity are two very important aspects of the production of my work.

W. Grace St. Rooftop - Stop Messing

This break has let me focus on these two aspects on my own free time and at my own free will. I’ve noticed that it has had a very positive impact on my work I have been producing since the end of the semester. Now that I feel comfortable about myself as a creative person, I am ready to start putting my work out there. Now, this blog will be an exploration of my creative work, both in and outside of schoolwork.

51. Review – A Retrospective

Finally, it is all done. I am completed with Curiousness. Now that I am done with all of my posts, I wanted to make a meta-post about which the top five posts I thought were most effective and why. None of these are in a particular order.

15. Unarticulate – Longing

This one was one of the first ones I did that I truly love. This one in general made me feel better as a person because I love my parents. Also, it related well with the brand due to the somber subject matter and I wrote in the “Cards.”

45. Social – Rekindling

I really love this one simply because it caused me to get back together with an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while. Also, I feel like this project feels like one of the more genuine posts I have done this semester.

13. Fluid – Letter Relations

The main thing I like about this one is how much it made me think within layers of the brand. This one really helped me springboard into other assignments.

45. Social – Opinion Poll

I liked this one mainly for how I tried to incorporate others into my ideas. It helped create inspiration for other ideas here and there.

21. Contrast – Comparison

Last but not least, this post. Like the Letter Relations, this post also encouraged me to see the layers of thought when thinking about a brand. I also really enjoy some of the photos I did for this one.

More thoughts about the project.

While I am mad that I didn’t get to finish, I am glad that I was able to come back after a long string of not doing projects. Though it was an emotional time, I eventually used that energy to do something good. I must say that this has challenged my creativity to the fullest. A combination of this and Create-a-thon have both made me look forward to the advertising program.

I’m thinking about keeping this blog and continuing to do projects with Kleenex. However, I would make it more fine artsy and emphasize the execution more. It would be an exploration of ideas I have using Kleenex as a means.

But that is for the future so, anyone who has been reading, I hope you enjoyed reading my blog!

50. Review – Commercials

If I do advertising as my chosen career, I would really like to work on with commercials. When we got this last directive, I immediately thought about reviewing something. Thus, I decided to review commercials because I love the video component advertising greatly. Here are the three reviews I wrote:

The main component I liked about this video was the visuals. The opening pan with the trees provided the viewer with a nice transition from whatever commercial/show he or she was watching. The visuals also had a lot of movement and motion, something I like to use when I shoot. I also enjoyed how the brand connected the facts with the narrative, causing the end to be satisfiable and slightly humorous.

I have plenty of problems with this ad. Though I did enjoy the cinematography, I found some of the shots to be somewhat pretentious. I would have probably not have made the setting night because I think setting contrast really enhances emotional moments. My biggest problem with this ad was the message. It seemed to be too vague. Did the girl break up with the guy? If so, why is she happy? Does the boyfriend miss her? If so, why does he miss her? The ad didn’t answer these questions quickly and concisely so I feel like it failed its objective.

This ad made me chuckle, which puts it above the last one immediately. I really enjoyed the ending kicker. It gave the ad something to remember it by and reminded the viewer of the brand again. The only thing I would have changed personally would be a new announcer. I didn’t find his voice to be that welcoming, which contrasted with the rest of the video in a bad way.
